2025 a year of celebrations for PHP with windows about API Platform, PHP, AFUP and Symfony

2025 is going to be a big year for anniversaries. We will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Symfony, the 30th anniversary of PHP, the 25th anniversary of AFUP and the 10th anniversary of API Platform. For SensioLabs, this is a major milestone that proves the longevity of the technologies in our ecosystem. We are proud to celebrate these anniversaries with the community all year long.

This year we are celebrating not 1, not 2, not 3, but ... 4 anniversaries at once! In addition to the 20th anniversary of Symfony, the open source PHP framework we created, we are honoring some of the key technologies and players in our ecosystem: PHP, AFUP and API Platform.

A bit of history

In the beginning was PHP, today's most widely used programming language for building platforms and websites. It represents between 75 and 80% of the world's web.

Created in 1995 by Rasmus Lerdorf, PHP has now reached version 8.4. The language has evolved significantly and continues to shape the future of web and application development. The creation of the PHP Foundation in 2021 ensures the long-term development of PHP.

In France, PHP has been supported for many years by AFUP, the French Association of PHP Users, created in 2000. AFUP unites volunteer PHP developers from all horizons, and is present everywhere in France, organizing annual meetups and iconic events with the community.

In 2005, Sensio launched Symfony, the open source PHP development framework, which soon became a standard for the PHP language. With a community of over 600,000 users worldwide, Symfony is also one of the world's most active community open source projects on Github. Symfony has provided PHP developers with a framework for professional use.

The latest addition in 2015 is API Platform, which has also grown significantly in 10 years. API Platform is a framework for building modern, scalable APIs. It is widely used in Symfony and provides a way to get the most out of the API format for your application.

Year-round celebrations with the community

SensioLabs is proud to be part of this amazing journey, building the future of these technologies through our open source contributions. We are blessed to be part of an extraordinary ecosystem that is elevating computer programming to new horizons.

Happy birthday to PHP, AFUP, Symfony and the API Platform 🎂 Thank you to all of our community members for your passion and dedication. It's because of all of you that we are where we are today.

We wish you many more years of success, innovation and open source for PHP and the future of programming.

SensioLabs supports the anniversary celebrations that will take place all year round. We are excited to share these milestones with the community:
