The SensioLabs team celebrating the 20th anniversary of Symfony with balloons

Time flies, especially when you're busy shaping the future of development! The SensioLabs team has just reached a milestone with the anniversary of the Symfony framework. We marked the occasion at the office, but the party isn't over yet. The date is already set for an XXL celebration at SymfonyCon Amsterdam 2025, from November 27 to 28.

As the creator of Symfony, this 20th anniversary represents a major milestone for SensioLabs, the company behind the framework. It's also a great chance to think about the journey so far and look to the future.

Symfony's 20th Anniversary: A Milestone for SensioLabs

When we talk about Symfony's 20th anniversary, we're not just talking about a framework, but a journey that has defined the DNA of SensioLabs. The framework was created by Fabien Potencier and our team back in 2005 when we were still Sensio. Symfony was born from a simple observation: to simplify the life of PHP developers.

These days, Symfony is everywhere. At the heart of the technology stacks of startups around the world or in critical development projects for major international groups. Symfony's 20th anniversary is a success story: that of a framework of European origin that has established itself as one of the global benchmarks for development with PHP. Over the last 20 years, Symfony has evolved significantly to adapt to technological advancements: Symfony 2, Flex, documentation, Symfony UX, Symfony AI, etc., but the philosophy combining robustness and performance has always remained the same. And SensioLabs is still on a mission to help companies in using Symfony for their projects from design to deployment, and training development teams all over the world.

SensioLabs is all about the same things as Symfony, like simplicity, innovation, open source and community. These values have influenced us a lot and still define us today. We all share this spirit of sharing and collaboration, with a curiosity for technology. Especially since our development team doesn't just use Symfony—they actively contribute to it and participate in the framework's growth. SensioLabs has also been a big supporter of the vibrant community that's been around Symfony for 20 years, by sponsoring conferences, Symfony releases, etc. A significant portion of SensioLabs' revenue is thus reinvested in open source to aid in Symfony's development.

Team Celebrations and SymfonyCon Amsterdam 2025

An anniversary like this calls for a party! We started with an internal celebration and will build up to a community-wide event.

First, this year has been full of anniversaries, including the 30th anniversary of PHP and the 10th anniversary of API Platform. We discussed these anniversaries in this article.

The kickoff of the festivities for Symfony's 20th anniversary was launched during the week of October 13 with the publication of a chronological timeline tracing the main stages of Symfony's history over the past 20 years. Several members of the core team, including, of course, Fabien Potencier and Nicolas Grekas, gathered to blow out Symfony's candles. At SensioLabs, we had a little get-together to celebrate and mark the occasion. It was a chance to share memories from the last 20 years, honor everyone who's contributed to Symfony, and discuss its future. Because behind the code, there is an entire team of passionate individuals who share a common history and a vision for the future.

SymfonyCon Amsterdam 2025 is definitely going to be the highlight of Symfony's 20th anniversary. The event will take place on November 27 and 28 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. SensioLabs will, of course, be at the heart of the event, as a Diamond sponsor. The conference will focus on the future of Symfony with the release of Symfony 8 and the latest news on Symfony AI, the new community initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into Symfony. Also, expect many surprises throughout the conference! Our team will be there to meet you and talk about your projects. And of course, the special anniversary party on Thursday evening at the Kanarie Club will be the climax of the anniversary celebration and a time to celebrate the Symfony community.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in Amsterdam to celebrate 20 extraordinary years of Symfony together and look ahead to the next 20.
