Many development teams are already using Claude Code or are just introducing it, and usually everyone does it differently, with their own prompts and their own rules. The result is code that works but doesn't adhere to the architecture guidelines the team has set for itself, and that often only surfaces in code reviews. Even experienced users rarely know which of their rules Claude reliably follows.
In this training you will build a set of rules tailored to Symfony projects that will run automatically with every change: from project knowledge and guardrails through static analysis to a review agent that checks what no tool can catch. This way Claude Code keeps fixing until every check passes, before any human or CI see the code.
Because the rule set is versioned in the repository, the whole team works by the same rules. This lightens your code reviews, and the skeptics on your team can verify for themselves that the agent works according to your standards. You will practice for two days on a Symfony sample project and develop a set of rules to use as a foundation for your own projects.
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 2 days
Available languages: German, English
Prerequisites:
A working knowledge of Symfony is required, including controllers, services and Doctrine.
You are comfortable with Git and happy to work in the terminal: the training uses Claude Code on the command line only.
No prior experience with Claude Code or other AI tools is required.
Each participant needs their own Claude Code account (Pro, Max, Team/Enterprise or API account). You receive a short setup guide in advance.
Learning Objectives:
Understand how Claude Code works and why rules in prompts alone are not followed reliably
Capture project knowledge and conventions instead of explaining them in every prompt
Set boundaries within which the agent can work independently and safely
Build an automatic feedback loop that lets the agent correct itself
Share the rule set with your team and apply it to your own projects

Freerich Bäthge - PHP & Symfony Software Consultant
Freerich Bäthge has been part of the Symfony community since its earliest days. As a consultant, he helps teams structure and evolve their applications cleanly. Along the way, he was quick to recognize the potential of Claude Code, and today he enthusiastically guides development teams through its adoption. He is convinced that it is changing software development for the better, and that this shift has only just begun.
Day 1: How Claude Code works and where it needs rules
How Claude Code works: the agentic loop, its tools and the context window
First steps in the sample project: exploring an unfamiliar Symfony codebase, building a first feature in it (controller, entity, migration, form) and having Claude commit it
Managing context: when to plan first (plan mode), when to start fresh, when to summarize, running several sessions in parallel with worktrees
Permissions and settings: what Claude may run without asking and what it may not, such as composer require or commands against the database, plus project and user settings
Capturing project knowledge: CLAUDE.md for Symfony projects, specific rules, e.g. for controllers and entities, and skills for recurring tasks such as Messenger handlers, Doctrine migrations or form types
Same rules, different results: solving one task in parallel with identical guidelines and finding out which rules Claude reliably follows and which need to be enforced
Day 2: A rule set that runs automatically
Quality tools as a feedback loop: analyzing code with PHPStan, enforcing consistent formatting, safeguarding behavior with tests and letting Claude fix its own work based on the results
Symfony's built-in tools: validating the configuration with Symfony and Doctrine linters, and letting Claude look into the running application container, profiler and logs through Symfony AI Mate
Hooks: blocking risky commands, triggering checks automatically after every edit and preventing Claude from gaming them, e.g. with baseline entries or @phpstan-ignore
Review agent: having a read-only subagent review, in its own context, what no static analysis can catch, such as whether Messenger handlers are idempotent
For the whole team: versioning skills, hooks and settings in the repository so everyone works by the same rules, and reviewing changes to them like code
Evolving the rule set: turning recurring review comments into new rules, transferring it to your own project step by step and recognizing where a rule gets in the way more than it helps
